Badlands International P.E.A.C.E.

Badlands International P.E.A.C.E. (Participant Encounter and Community Engagement) is one of SCG’s international peace education programs developed in affiliation with Badlands National Park and supported by the Badlands Friends Group.  The program provides the space for Native American and non-Native high school students from the greater Badlands region of South Dakota – including the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation and Rapid City - to meet, learn about one another, and acquire communication, leadership, and peacebuilding skills.  The program’s goals are to build community, impart concrete communication and leadership skills, increase cross-cultural competency and awareness of global issues, cultivate empathy and understanding, and develop self-esteem and self-efficacy to enable participants to affect positive change.

Badlands International P.E.A.C.E. consists of a one-week summer intensive and a yearlong follow-up program of meet-ups, residential retreats, group service projects, and an International Encounter Trip. Badlands International P.E.A.C.E. stands at the intersection of global learning and local action; Participants learn about a region in conflict and experience an International Encounter Trip while applying what they learn to improving their home communities

“The experience was invaluable; I am thrilled to have been a part of it.”

SCG looks for diverse South Dakota teens from Native American and non-Native communities. Participants are selected on the basis of their leadership potential, interest in meeting with peers from different backgrounds, commitment to the full yearlong program, and enthusiasm for traveling to a region outside of the United States. The selection process includes a written application, interview and references. Scholarships are available.
