Introducing the Interfaith Youth Leadership Council (IYLC)
Seeking Common Ground and the Abrahamic Initiative
January 28, 2007

The Abrahamic Initiative (AI) is a program started by St. John’s Cathedral in 2001 to bring together Jews, Muslims, and Christians around their common religious roots in an effort to foster understanding and promote peace. Since its inception, the AI has involved hundreds of participants in an ongoing lecture series that explores a wide range of interfaith issues. The sessions draw as many as 300 participants, who benefit from a deeper understanding of the connections between different faiths. Many individuals of different faiths have formed friendships, and some of the relationships forged as part of the Initiative have resulted in human service collaborations among faith groups throughout the Denver Metro area.

In the spring of 2006, the AI approached Seeking Common Ground (SCG) with an idea to expand the program to include youth. SCG was asked to consult with AI in the creation of the Interfaith Youth Leadership Council (IYLC), which would be dedicated to creating an active interfaith youth community in the Denver area. The IYLC is youth-led, with youth members driving outreach efforts, designing and implementing community service projects, and being directly responsible for the growth of the council.

This project is built around “faith in action” and is designed to benefit participants in three core ways: 1) through the active joy of service to others – especially with individuals who might be different from participants; 2) through reflection on what service means to participants as part of their own faith tradition; and 3) through sharing what participants discover about their faith’s commitment to community service with young people from different faiths. SCG is training and empowering the IYLC members using SCG’s methodology.

In the fall of 2006, the first council members were selected. The inaugural IYLC met for the first planning and training session in January 2007. The theme for the session was Building an Interfaith Community. Participants had a chance to get to know each other, as well as Program Leader, Rabah Kamal, and AI Steering Committee Liaison, Hal Simmons. Rabah Kamal is a graduate of SCG’s Face to Face/ Faith to Faith program, and has been hired as the AI coordinator. SCG staff led council members through a series of workshops that addressed religious identity, listening to the ‘other’, and ‘faith in action’. The council will participate in ongoing, regular meetings for interfaith learning and dialogue; conduct outreach to involve more young people; and design and implement service projects through June 2007. Stay tuned for more updates.
