The Building Bridges for Peace - Denver Program
SCG partners with DPS to create new program for Denver teens
February 9, 2007

Seeking Common Ground (SCG) is excited to announce the launch of a new international leadership development and peacebuilding program for American high school teens, Building Bridges for Peace Denver (BBfP-Denver). This program is in partnership with Denver Public Schools (DPS) and in consultation with Facing History and Ourselves. BBfP-Denver will train diverse Denver area high school students with the tools to become change agents in creating a more just and peaceful world, beginning at home. The pilot 2007-2008 program is open to students in East and South High Schools. SCG hopes to open future years of the program to all DPS high school students.

The BBfP-Denver program begins with a residential weekend intensive held in Colorado designed to build interpersonal communication skills and foundational relationships among the group. The participants will then meet regularly for additional skill-building workshops and seminars throughout the school year, design and implement a service project, and produce a portfolio of their experience. Students are able to earn school credit for their participation in the program.

Through BBfP-Denver, students have the opportunity to:
· Acquire and hone communication and dialogue skills
· Learn to empathize with and see the humanity in the ‘other’
· Explore issues around identity, perspective, and conflict
· Gain a broader world view through enhanced understanding of international conflict
· Develop cross-cultural competence through collaborative relationships with peers from diverse backgrounds and other parts of the world
· Recognize within themselves the capacity to effect change in their community
· Take on new leadership roles in their local community to build bridges between groups and be an advocate for the civil and human rights of all community members

Students also have an opportunity to participate in an optional international enhancement trip. The pilot 2007 trip is to Northern Ireland. While in Northern Ireland, participants will explore the complexities of the Northern Ireland conflict, focusing on sectarianism, the historic 1998 Multi-party Agreement, transitional justice, and the role of young people in transforming society. In future years, the international enhancement trip will be to other areas of the world in which SCG conducts programs, such as South Africa and the Middle East.
