US Institute for Peace provides SCG with support for BBfP evaluative study
SCG and the United States Institute of Peace
February 1, 2006

Seeking Common Ground (SCG), a Denver-based non-profit dedicated to empowering young women with the tools to build peaceful communities, will undertake a two-year project to evaluate the long-term impact of its flagship program, Building Bridges for Peace (BBfP). BBfP is a leadership development program designed for teenage women from Israel, Palestine, and the US that includes both a two-week summer intensive – during which time participants learn communication techniques, develop leadership skills, and engage in activities to promote peace and the empowerment of women, and a yearlong follow up program – which enables participants to apply the skills acquired during the summer intensive by planning and implementing projects in their home communities.

As a result of SCG’s growth and expansion over the past 14 years, individuals and organizations often approach SCG to learn more about the theory and practice of BBfP, to understand the fundamentals involved in new program implementation, and to acquire strategies for strengthening their own programming models, staff training techniques, and evaluative instruments.

To advance the pursuit of knowledge in this field, the United States Institute for Peace has granted SCG support to embark on a two-year project to evaluate the long-term impact of the BBfP methodology. With this funding, SCG will work in partnership with faculty at the University of Denver’s Conflict Resolution Institute and the University of Delaware’s Department of Sociology to develop a tool for measuring and evaluating the attitudinal, behavioral, and other changes that BBfP participants undergo. At the present time, no such tool exists in the field. At the conclusion of the study, this new instrument and the related findings will be published, making this knowledge available to practitioners, educators and scholars worldwide.

SCG looks forward to this challenge and to contributing to our collective understanding of how to build peace in the world, one young person at a time.

If you have questions or would like to help with this project by donating funds or giving of your time, please contact Erin at erin@s-c-g.org or 303.691.2393.
