COMMUNITY, CULTURE, AND SERVICE IN CHICAGO
January 6-8, 2006 Building Bridges for Peace participants and LITs gathered in Chicago to enjoy each other’s company and tackle the interactive experience of Community, Culture and Service. After deep dish pizza on Friday evening, our highlight of Saturday was participating in two community service projects. We helped to sort and prepare donations for The Children’s Place Association in Humboldt Park. The Children’s Place works with children and families who are infected and/or affected by HIV/AIDS. Then we prepared sack lunches and cleaned at the Inspiration Corporation’s Weekend Engagement Center in Edgewater. Through both activities we were able to experience some of Chicago and engage in different but both meaningful expressions of service. We also learned more about models of service during the weekend and analyzed our local work with different service organizations.
Saturday night we enjoyed traditional Mexican food at Las Piñatas and visited The Second City training theater at Donny’s Skybox for “The Beatbox,” a freestyle hip hop and comedy improve performance. The neighborhood of Old Town was vibrant and a fun part of our stay in Chicago.
We graciously accepted the hospitality of the Ramada Plaza O’Hare hotel and generosity of our Chicago BBfP friends. Now we are looking forward to completing our Individual Projects, nominating other young women for the 2006 program and meeting again in April for our final retreat.
